SUSTAINABILITY

Good for you, Good for the PLANET too

At Barakat, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do from sourcing responsibly and supporting local farms, to reducing food waste and lowering our carbon footprint. Together, we’re growing a greener tomorrow.

our sustainability vision

We make small choices that add up to real change

Sustainability is about doing the right thing consistently. This means reducing waste, sourcing locally, protecting what we take from the earth and creating systems that give more than they use. We align our efforts with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to ensure our growth leaves a positive impact. Because, keeping it fresh also means keeping it future-ready.

eco-friendly practices

We work with nature not around it

We have woven sustainable practices into the way we source, produce and deliver. From composting fruit pulp to using 99.9% biodegradable bottles, we are making small changes that leave a lighter footprint.

future sustainability goals

Committed to Sustainability, Step by Step

  • Zero-Waste Operations by 2026 – Converting 100% of organic by-products into reusable resources such as animal feed, compost, and value-added ingredients
  • Carbon-Neutral by 2030 – Cutting emissions through local sourcing, renewable energy, and greener logistics to achieve net-zero operations.
  • 100% Sustainable Packaging by 2030 – Phasing out single-use plastics and ensuring all packaging is biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable.
WHY SUSTAINABLE SOURCING MATTERS

Barakat 100-Mile Initiative

The 100-Mile initiative is an innovative program, which aimed to source ingredients from within a 100-mile radius, reducing transportation emissions and supporting local farmers. Our local growers follow the best sustainable practices which include crop rotation, soil conservation practices, efficient water management practices, beekeeping and many more.

CERTIFIED PARTNERSHIPS ACROSS REGIONS

Behind every fresh produce is a farmer we trust

We’ve built a long-standing partnership with GAP-certified farms and distributors across the UAE, India, Kenya, Egypt and more. Each farm is vetted for labour practices, environmental compliance and transparency. Ensuring responsibility from root to shelf.

LOCAL FIRST APPROACH

Nurturing Soil, Nourishing Communities

Barakat is proud to partner with local and regional growers who embrace regenerative agricultural practices, prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation. By sourcing from farmers committed to restoring ecosystems and enhancing resilience, we ensure that our fresh produce not only nourishes people but also helps regenerate the planet for future generations.

COLD-CHAIN INTEGRITY

We keep it fresh from the farm to the fridge

We protect freshness at every step. So, what you get is crisp, clean and just as it should be.

  • 350+ refrigerated vehicles to keep produce fresh
  • Products dispatched daily from 6 certified facilities
  • Real-time monitoring to reduce spoilage and waste
OUR ZERO-WASTE MISSION

We don’t believe in waste just better ways

At Barakat, every peel, every bottle and every process is a chance to do better. From compost bins to community rewards, we have built small habits that are making a big difference. Our goal is simple: use what’s needed, reuse what we can and never stop improving how we handle the rest.

FOOD WASTE RECOVERY

Every ingredient deserves a purpose

We treat food with respect. Trimmings, overruns and fruits that don’t meet our standards are redirected wherever possible. By recovering what we can and reducing excess through better planning, we ensure our produce goes further.

COMPOSTING ORGANIC WASTE

We give back to the soil, naturally

Nothing goes to waste at Barakat, not even the peels. After we juice our fruits, the leftover pulp, skin and scraps are turned into nutrient-rich compost. It’s our way of closing the loop. Giving back to the earth what it gives us and nourishing the soil for future harvests. A simple step but one that helps us to be grounded in quality and care.

EMPLOYEE WASTE REDUCTION TRAINING

We reduce, reuse and rethink everyday

All our employees are trained in responsible waste management. We run regular workshops, audits and improvement drives to help everyone understand the impact of daily choices. Because sustainability sticks when everyone is a part of it. And every bit counts.

A COMMITMENT

Saving what sustains us

At Barakat, every drop of water and every unit of energy is measured, managed and respected. Because what fuels our work should never be taken for granted.

ENERGY-SMART INFRASTRUCTURE

We are built to be sustainable

We use energy-efficient lighting, insulation and automated systems to reduce waste in all our facilities. Water is reused wherever possible, while all our equipment is selected with performance and planet in mind.

WATER-EFFICIENT PROCESSING LINES

We recirculate, rethink and respect every drop

Our fresh-cut and juice lines are fitted with high-efficiency nozzles, auto shut-off valves and water recirculation systems. All reduce freshwater consumption without compromising quality or hygiene. We conserve without cutting corners.

RENEWABLE ENERGY INTEGRATION

Powering up with intention

We’ve started integrating solar solutions in our facilities with a goal to make 10% of our operations solar powered by 2026. It’s not about quick fixes. It’s about a gradual, meaningful shift towards building resilience and reducing dependencies.

BIODEGRADABLE BY DESIGN

Sustainable packaging initiatives

We have embarked on a sustainable packaging initiative, the key elements of which include Ice cream paper cups, Bio-Degradable bottles and ice pop packs, cloth jute bags, organic pre-packs and sustainable vacuum bags. Our 99.9% biodegradable, US FDA- certified bottles & caps take a maximum of 5 to 6 years to biodegrade. As they breakdown, they convert to ‘humus’- organic material and turn into soil, leaving no micro-plastics behind.

BUILT TO PROTECT

99.9% biodegradable bottles and caps —no plastic, no trace

Our bottles are engineered to protect nutrition, preserve taste and minimise spoilage. Our packaging holds up through transit and temperature changes without holding the environment hostage.

BETTER HABITS

We have made it easy to dispose

To ensure nothing ends up in the wrong place, we clearly mark what is recyclable, biodegradable and what can be reused. It’s a small change that adds up to something bigger. For the planet. And for the future.

SOURCING LOCAL

B+ Portal: Where Fresh Meets Future

Barakat’s B+ Portal is our innovative digital platform that gives customers 24/7 access to our full range, while also tracking the CO₂ savings made by choosing local over imported produce. By combining convenience with sustainability, the portal helps our customers to  make smarter choices that are good for both their operations and the planet.

COLD-CHAIN OPTIMIZATION

We deliver with less fuel

Our delivery vehicles are supported by intelligent route planning that cuts fuel, not freshness. Because smarter dispatch means fewer emissions on the road and more care in every delivery.

LONG-TERM GOAL

30% lighter vision by 2030

We’re working toward a 30% lower carbon footprint per product by 2030. Rethinking how we source, move, and deliver. That means transforming our cold chain, investing in clean energy, and holding ourselves accountable
